Mission: Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

My Reason for Climbing Kilimanjaro
In February 2025, I took on one of the most challenging yet exciting adventures of my life: Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro! This incredible journey has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember, and I’m thrilled to have finally made it happen! It’s not just about ticking off a personal goal; this climb is also my way of supporting a cause that’s incredibly close to my heart. I’m raising funds for Fowler’s Syndrome UK, a charity dedicated to raising awareness and supporting those affected by this rare condition.

Updates
21/12/2024: Finally completed my ordering of clothing & equipment 😀
It has been a looooong few months of researching and buying all the necessary clothing and equipment. I can’t quite believe how expensive it has become but I know that it will be worth it when I’m waking up above the clouds on Kilimanjaro. I bought the majority of my gear in the Black Friday sales and I have today received the last of my equipment. It all feels very real now and with just over two months to go, the next two months are sure to be filled with a mixture of excitement and anticipation!
18/01/2025: Checking my Gear and Questioning my choices 😅

I feel like I have everything I need but I’m a little nervous that it’s going to be over the weight limit🤞

26/01/2025: Snack prepping for my 9 day climb 🍫🥨
I will be on the mountain for a total of 9 days and whilst I know that the tour operator will provide lots of food, I’m worried about not being able to eat a lot on the mountain due to altitude sickness. To hopefully help combat this, I have packed some of my favourite snacks that are high in carbs, protein and sugar to give me an extra boost of energy, when needed.

07/02/2025 – I have summited Kilimanjaro on my 30th Birthday!! 🎂⛰️

FAQs
Below are the questions that I get asked the most often when I tell people that I’m climbing Kilimanjaro. If you have a question about this mission, that isn’t below, feel free to email me and I’ll be happy to answer 😊
Pre-Climb FAQs
Climbing Kilimanjaro has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember and I thought that now was as good a time as any to complete a travel dream of mine. Because Kilimanjaro is quite a feat, I decided that it would be a good idea to raise some money for charity whilst doing it. My trip to Kilimanjaro has been completely self-funded so all raised funds are going directly to Fowler’s Syndrome UK and I couldn’t be prouder to support such a great cause!
Fundraising has been a bit of a balancing act while preparing for the climb, but I’m grateful for the support I’ve received so far. I set up a JustGiving page where generous donors have contributed to support research for Fowler’s Syndrome. Every donation helps fund crucial research for this little-known but impactful condition. You can check out my fundraising page here.
I did a lot of research into the different routes and decided on the Northern Circuit Route. The reason why I decided to choose this route is because it has the highest success rate due to its slightly longer course, which gives you longer to acclimatise. I am particularly worried about altitude sickness, so giving myself the best possible chance to acclimatise is a good way to try and increase my chance of summiting.
I’m incorporating breathing exercises into my routine to help with oxygen intake and staying calm during the climb. Mentally, I’m focusing on preparing myself for the physical and emotional challenges by reminding myself of what my body and mind are capable of enduring and overcoming.
I’ve sourced my equipment and clothing from a variety of stores, including Trespass, Mountain Warehouse, Cotswold Outdoor, Decathlon, and Go Outdoors. If you’re considering a similar challenge, I also recommend checking out North Face for their high-quality gear, although it was outside my budget, they’re worth considering during sales.
Speaking of sales, timing is everything! I bought the majority of my gear during Black Friday deals, which helped me save significantly. Planning ahead and waiting for discounts can really make a difference in your budget for such a big adventure.
Altitude sickness is my biggest concern, as it’s one of the most common challenges on Kilimanjaro. I’m also anticipating the cold temperatures, especially as we approach the summit. Camping in such conditions will be a true test of endurance, but I’m preparing as much as possible to face these hurdles head-on.
Preparation is key! Train your body and do thorough research about the climb, gear, and altitude adjustment. Also, bring snacks that you genuinely enjoy—this can make a big difference if your appetite diminishes at high altitudes. Having familiar, comforting food can help you stay nourished and keep your spirits up on the mountain,.
This climb is more than just ticking off an item on my bucket list; it’s about contributing to an important cause. Raising money for Fowler’s Syndrome research gives this journey deeper meaning. On a personal level, I love nature and am particularly looking forward to waking up above the clouds during the final days of the climb. It’s moments like these that help to keep me grounded and I cannot wait to experience the best parts of nature!
Post-Climb FAQs
How long does it take to recover after climbing Kilimanjaro?
Recovery time varies from person to person, but most climbers feel fatigued for a few days after the trek. Your body will need time to adjust, especially after high-altitude exposure. It’s normal to experience sore muscles, mild swelling in the feet and legs, and general exhaustion. Staying hydrated, eating nutritious food, and getting plenty of rest will help speed up recovery.
After descending, it’s important to clean and dry your gear properly to prevent mould or damage. Boots should be aired out, and clothing should be washed thoroughly, especially anything exposed to dust and sweat. If you’ve hired gear, return it promptly. Many trekkers choose to donate some of their equipment (such as jackets or boots) to porters or local organisations supporting mountain crews.
Some climbers experience lingering symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches, dizziness, or mild nausea, even after descending. The best remedy is rest, hydration, and allowing your body to readjust to lower altitudes. If symptoms persist for more than a few days or worsen, seek medical advice.
Climbing Kilimanjaro is a physically and mentally demanding challenge, and reaching the summit is an unforgettable achievement. Many climbers, myself included, walk away with a newfound sense of resilience and confidence. It’s a reminder that with determination and the right mindset, you can push beyond your limits. The experience also deepens your appreciation for nature, the kindness of the guides and porters, and the simplicity of life on the mountain.
Climbing Kilimanjaro was an incredible experience, but also one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced. Right after the climb, I might have said “never again!”—but now, with some time to reflect, I can definitely see the appeal of returning/climbing a similar mountain. The breathtaking landscapes, the camaraderie with fellow trekkers, and the thrill of reaching the summit make it tempting to go back. That said, there are plenty of other adventures to take on too!
