Why Day Trips?
As you are already aware, I am on a mission to visit as many countries as I can, around my full-time job. An extremely effective way of doing this, is by taking day trips to a new country. There are of course pros and cons to day trips, with the most noticeable negative being that you are unable to fully experience the country’s culture in less than a day.
However if you are happy to explore a new city in a timely manner and don’t mind missing some crucial sights, taking a day trip is a sure way to reach your travel goals quicker. Day trips are an exciting and spontaneous adventure that is sure to become a focal talking point amongst your friends/family.
Inspiration for day trips
I’ve embarked on several unforgettable day trips that have opened my eyes to the beauty and magic of travel. Let me take you on a journey through some of my favourite day trips and share tips on how you too can make the most of your short escapades.
Oslo, Norway – A Scandinavian Christmas Delight

One chilly winter morning, I hopped on a plane from London to Oslo, Norway, to immerse myself in the enchanting Christmas markets. The festive decorations, the aroma of cinnamon-spiced treats, and the twinkling lights created a magical atmosphere that captured the essence of the season.
To maximize your experience, arrive early to beat the crowds and indulge in traditional Norwegian delicacies like gløgg (mulled wine) and smultringer (doughnuts). We also found these cheesecakes on a stick, they were festively decorated and were absolutely delicious.
Monaco – A Glimpse of Luxury in a Day
Leaving the charming city of Nice behind, I set off on a day trip to Monaco, a playground for the rich and famous. From the opulent Monte Carlo Casino to the dazzling yachts dotting the marina, every corner embraces luxury and glamour. To make the most of your visit, take a leisurely stroll through the old town of Monaco-Ville. Sample local delicacies at the vibrant markets and bask in the Mediterranean sun along Larvotto Beach.
Visiting the grand prix track is also a must-do when in the home of Formula 1 racing. Monaco is a short train ride away from Nice and I can assure you that you will not be disappointed when you visit this small but enchanting country. Find out whether Monaco is worth a visit from Nice.

Sarandë, Albania – Beach Bliss Just a Ferry Ride Away
One fine day in Corfu, Greece, I found myself boarding a ferry to Sarandë, Albania, a hidden gem boasting pristine beaches and turquoise waters. As I lounged on the sun-kissed shores, surrounded by breathtaking mountain vistas, I realised the beauty of a spontaneous day trip.
To enhance your beach day, pack a picnic, rent a kayak to explore hidden coves, and unwind with a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear sea. Exploring the delicacies of Albanian cuisine is a must when in Sarandë. Here is a picture of the spacious ferry that transported us to the interesting city of Sarandë.

Bratislava, Slovakia – An Evening of Old-World Charm

In the twilight hours, I ventured on a quick evening trip from Vienna to Bratislava, Slovakia; a city soaked in history and charm. Wandering through the cobbled streets of the old town, I marveled at the medieval architecture and vibrant street art.
For a memorable experience, savor local delicacies like bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings) at a cozy tavern, admire the iconic Bratislava Castle illuminated against the night sky, and mingle with friendly locals at bustling pubs.
Exploring the Vatican in an Afternoon

One of my most unforgettable day trips was exploring the Vatican City, a sovereign city-state surrounded by Rome. From the awe-inspiring St. Peter’s Basilica to the magnificent Sistine Chapel, Vatican City is a treasure trove of art, history, and spirituality.
To make the most of your afternoon in Vatican City, start early to avoid the crowds and consider booking a guided tour to gain deeper insights into this cultural marvel.
Discovering Tallinn, Estonia’s Medieval Charm

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is a captivating blend of medieval and modern influences. Picture cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and fairy-tale towers. My day trip from Helsinki to Tallinn was nothing short of magical. To make the most of your visit, immerse yourself in the city’s history by strolling through the UNESCO-listed Old Town, sampling traditional Estonian cuisine, and capturing picture-perfect moments at the scenic viewpoints. Tallinn is personally one of my favourite cities that I have visited and I would highly recommend a trip to this medieval wonder.
Savouring the Flavors of Dublin, Ireland
Dublin, the lively capital of Ireland, is a city that can be explored in a day, but its memories will last a lifetime. During my day trip from London, I indulged in a visit to the legendary Guinness Storehouse, where I learned about the art of brewing and savored a pint of the iconic stout. Another highlight was trying fresh oysters at a local eatery, immersing myself in Dublin’s culinary delights.
