Things to do in Bucharest – A 2025 guide

I have recently returned from a trip to Bucharest and I genuinely had such an incredible time in this incredible Romanian city. I wish that I was able to visit Bucharest for longer, although I will definitely be returning in the near future! This is why I have created a guide of the top things to do in Bucharest for the busy traveller. Allow me to share with you my must-see sights and I have also included some of the things that I wish I had seen, if I had more time to explore.

Is Bucharest worth visiting?

Absolutely! Bucharest often gets overshadowed by other European capitals, but it’s a city full of surprises. From its grand architecture and historical sites to its buzzing nightlife and warm locals, there’s plenty to love. Whether you’re into history, food, or culture, Bucharest has something for every traveller.

2025 is an especially exciting year to visit Bucharest as the city continues to modernise while preserving its rich historical roots. New festivals, exhibitions, and restaurants are popping up all the time, giving you plenty of reasons to explore.

Is Bucharest safe to visit in 2025?

Yes, Bucharest is generally a safe city for travellers. Like any major city, it’s always a good idea to stay alert in busy areas, but I personally felt safe walking around, even at night. The Old Town can get lively in the evenings with its many bars and clubs, so be mindful of your belongings. Locals are friendly and helpful, and many people in tourist areas speak English.

From 2025 onwards, Bucharest has further enhanced its public transportation system, and there are additional efforts to improve city infrastructure and tourist safety. As with any trip, taking basic precautions and staying in well-lit, populated areas will ensure a worry-free visit.

Is Bucharest affordable?

Yes, Bucharest is relatively affordable compared to many other European capitals. Whether you’re looking for budget-friendly activities, accommodations, or meals, there are plenty of options to keep your costs low.

For example, many of the city’s top attractions, such as parks and historic buildings, are either free or have very reasonable entrance fees. Taxis and ride-sharing services are affordable, but you can also use the metro system, which is both cheap and efficient.

Things to do in Bucharest

Bucharest is packed with a variety of experiences, from historic landmarks to modern attractions. Whether you’re a fan of art, architecture, history, or simply soaking up local culture, there’s something for everyone. During my trip, I was fortunate to explore several of the city’s most famous sights, but there were still many places I didn’t get to see. You can read my recommendations below.

Visit Therme Spa

One of the highlights of my trip to Bucharest was a day of pure relaxation at Therme Bucharest, one of the largest wellness centers in Europe. Located just outside the city, this massive thermal spa offers indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, and tropical gardens. The ambiance is perfect for anyone looking to unwind after a busy day of sightseeing.

Tip: Make sure to visit during the evening for a magical atmosphere, with the pools illuminated and a relaxed vibe all around. I highly recommend setting aside a half or full day for this experience.

Explore the Old Town

No trip to Bucharest is complete without wandering through the city’s lively Old Town. This pedestrian-friendly area is full of history, bars, cafes, and boutique shops. You’ll find a mix of architecture, from medieval churches to Art Nouveau buildings. It’s the perfect place to explore during the day for a coffee or to return at night when the area comes alive with nightlife.

Some notable landmarks in the Old Town include the Stavropoleos Monastery, a beautiful Eastern Orthodox church, and Curtea Veche, the ruins of the Old Princely Court where Vlad the Impaler once ruled.

Visit the Palace of Parliament

We visited the Palace of Parliament at night time, which was extra special because the Parliament was beautifully illuminated amongst the night sky. However, it would also be cool to see in the daylight and I think we would have explored more around the area, had we gone during the day instead of the evening.

Visit the Romanian Athenaeum

The Romanian Athenaeum is one of Bucharest’s most iconic landmarks, and I wish I’d had more time to fully appreciate its grandeur. This stunning neoclassical concert hall is home to the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra and is renowned for its acoustics and elegant design.

If you’re a fan of classical music, try to catch a performance here. Even if you’re not, the building itself is worth visiting for its architectural beauty and historical significance.

Take a trip to Transylvania

I regret not being able to take an all-day tour to Transylvania, but it’s definitely at the top of my list for my next visit. A trip to Bran Castle, often referred to as Dracula’s Castle, is a must for anyone interested in Romanian history and folklore. Transylvania, with its Gothic castles, medieval towns, and breathtaking scenery, is an easy day trip from Bucharest.

If you’re visiting around the holidays, the castle looks especially enchanting in the winter months when it’s surrounded by snow, giving off a magical, fairy-tale vibe.

Eating and drinking in Bucharest

One of the best parts of my trip was discovering Bucharest’s diverse culinary scene. We had many incredible meals, and I highly recommend checking out:

  • Efendi Turkish Restaurant: A great place for authentic Turkish cuisine. The flavors were rich, and the service was excellent.
  • Casa Doina: A perfect spot to enjoy traditional Romanian dishes in a beautiful setting. The historic villa ambiance made the dining experience extra special.
  • Les Bourgeois: This French-inspired bistro was a delightful find, offering delicious European dishes with a romantic, cozy atmosphere.

There are plenty of cafes, bistros, and street food stalls around the city, so whether you’re looking for traditional Romanian cuisine or international options, Bucharest has it all.

Conclusion of things to do in Bucharest

Overall, Bucharest is a city filled with fun and unique activities, as well as friendly locals, heaps of culture, and exciting tours. Whether you’re a history lover, foodie, or adventure seeker, you’ll definitely find something to enjoy here. I was blown away by how much the city has to offer, and I’m already planning my return trip to see the things I missed out on.

If you’re looking for a destination that’s affordable, safe, and filled with surprises, Bucharest is definitely worth a visit in 2025 (and every year after)!
