When I visited, there was a market and LIVE music filling the square with an incredible atmosphere. I can guarantee that you won’t be spoilt of things to do in the square.
- Alexander Nevsky Cathedral: A stunning Russian Orthodox cathedral that dominates the skyline. This cathedral divides locals but it is undeniably stunning. I couldn’t quite believe the incredible architecture when I saw it firsthand. The below is a picture that I took and even this, only shows some of the intricate detailing.
- St. Olaf’s Church: Once the tallest building in the world, its tower offers incredible views of the city. There are also many viewing points located around Tallinn and St. Olaf’s Church can be seen proudly from each one! I found this to be the best way to fully appreciate the beauty of the church.
- Toompea Hill: A historic area where you’ll find Toompea Castle and sweeping views of Tallinn from the Kohtuotsa viewing platform. It was particularly snowy and icy when I visited so if this is the case for you, exercise caution if you decide to visit. However, I would highly recommend a visit and there are information boards scattered around the area giving further insights to the historical value of Toompea Castle.
2. Visit Kadriorg Palace and Park
Kadriorg Palace is a beautiful Baroque palace built by Peter the Great for his wife, Catherine I. Today, it houses the Estonian Art Museum’s foreign collection. Surrounding the palace is the sprawling Kadriorg Park, where you can enjoy a leisurely walk among fountains, flowerbeds, and the beautiful Swan Pond.
