European cities with the best transportation

Every time I visit a country, I like to experience the full culture by using their transportation systems. Here in the UK, particularly in London, I feel that our transportation systems such as the London underground and the various different bus routes, is an efficient way to travel. Below I will be listing some of the best transportation systems within countries that I have visited, and explaining what makes each one a contender on this list 🚂🚍🛥️

Vienna – Where transportation meets efficiency

Vienna has one of the best transportation systems that I have experienced with their metro system being extremely efficient and easy to use. The metro is heavily signposted, making it easy to know where you are going. We used the metro system multiple times to visit sites such as Prater amusement park (which is a little out of the main area) and to visit multiple vibrant areas when we didn’t fancy the walk, mainly late at night. Vienna is also home to a large railway station with links to other major European cities including Bratislava and Budapest, so you will not be short of places to see within a visit to this incredible city.

Barcelona – Simple yet effective transportation

Barcelona has one of the more advanced metro links and I was pleasantly surprised with the technological aspect of their underground system, as well as their buses. We used the metro system regularly and each time, we were able to easily navigate our way through the large stations and busy routes. The metro map is an efficient visual representation of the complex system, which clears any prior confusion that you may experience. Barcelona’s metro system is still to this day, one of the best that I have used and you can be sure to easily and efficiently find your way around this stunning city via their public transportation links.

Sofia – Simplicity is key

When I landed in Sofia, I was initially confused with how to get to the main centre, however I was yet to realise how easy it was going to be! There is a metro station right outside the airport with accessible links to the city centre. When using the metro, it is extremely easy to know where you are, due to the handy maps displayed throughout each carriage. There are lots of metro stations conveniently located around Sofia and with the roads being large and quite dangerous to cross, the metro underpasses are a favourable route for commuters.

Lisbon – Modern transport

Lisbon has a wonderful underground system which is less complex than others due to the size of the routes and there being less stations affiliated with the main metro system. However, just because the metro has slightly less stations than other popular metros in similar European countries, does not mean that Lisbon’s metro system is not as efficient as their European counterparts. As well as having an effective underground system, Lisbon is known for their large tram system. Tram 28 is a particularly popular ride amongst tourists, due to being an old relic which hasn’t changed very much since 1930, the year that it was created. This makes for a fun and unique ride on an old styled yellow tram with stunning, wooden interior.

Amsterdam – Extensive transportation

Crossing the road from the station to the main area of Amsterdam can be very daunting due to having to look out for cars, buses, bicycles, trams and motorbikes! Although this gives you a good glimpse into the ease of travelling around Amsterdam, because you are sure to find your preferred type of transportation easily and quickly. Amsterdam is also a very accessible city by foot, so whether you plan to experience the culture of the city by foot or vehicle, you are sure to find a transportation method that suits everybody in your group.

These are just some of my favourite transportation links that I have experienced so far. I am planning a trip to Berlin in a couple of months and I have heard that the transportation system in Berlin is phenomenal, so watch this space for more updates ✈
