On a winter visit, the truffle lasagne stood out: a vegetarian dish with a rich mushroom centre that was nothing short of extraordinary. The drinks are equally impressive, and the staff’s warm hospitality adds to the experience. With a spacious layout, it offers a comfortable dining environment. Whether you’re after a challenging hike, a gentle woodland walk, or just an escape into fresh mountain air, this stunning mountain has it all. In the warmer months, the trails come alive with colourful wildflowers, and the views from the top are absolutely breathtaking, offering a panoramic look over Sofia and beyond.

If you visit in winter, Vitosha transforms into a snowy wonderland. It’s one of Bulgaria’s most accessible ski resorts, making it ideal for beginners or anyone wanting a quick ski fix without trekking too far from the city. Even if skiing isn’t your thing, a snowy walk or a cosy meal at one of the mountain huts can make for an unforgettable day.

A quick tip: The Simeonovo Gondola is a scenic way to reach the higher parts of the mountain, but it doesn’t always run—so check in advance and have a backup plan (like taking a taxi up to Aleko Hut) just in case.

Rila Monastery

A trip to Rila Monastery is like stepping back in time. Hidden deep in the Rila Mountains, about a two-hour drive from Sofia, this UNESCO-listed monastery is one of Bulgaria’s most iconic landmarks. And for good reason! The monastery itself is a masterpiece, with its vibrant frescoes, striped black-and-white arches, and a history dating back over 1,000 years.

It’s not just the monastery that makes the trip worthwhile, the whole setting is stunning. Surrounded by forested mountains and fresh mountain air, the peaceful atmosphere feels worlds away from city life. If you have time, take a short hike to St. Ivan Rilski’s Cave, where the monastery’s founder once lived as a hermit.

If you’re not driving, guided tours from Sofia make visiting hassle-free, often including stops at other scenic spots like the Stob Pyramids, unique rock formations nearby. And don’t leave without trying the monastery’s famous mekitsi (Bulgarian fried dough) with homemade jam, trust me, they’re delicious!
