Korčula, Croatia: A stunning and isolate island
There are many small islands just off of the beautiful Croatian sea, each one is magnificent in their own right but allow me to introduce the stunning, Croatian island of Korčula.
Getting to Korčula from Split
During our stay in Split, we decided to take a day trip to the enchanting island of Korčula. Getting there was incredibly simple, and the journey itself was part of the experience. We booked tickets for one of the regular ferries that run between Split and Korčula. There are lots of ticket sale points around the harbour so booking advance is not necessary. We personally chose to book our tickets via the information boxes on the day but advance booking can also be found online if this is your preferred method. The ferry ride was not only convenient but also comfortable. As we settled into our seats on the spacious ferry, we were able to relax and enjoy the view of the Adriatic as it stretched out before us, the vibrant coastline of Split slowly fading behind us.
The journey took just about an hour, but time seemed to fly as we watched the clear, turquoise waters pass by, dotted with sailboats and fishing vessels. Upon our arrival in Korčula, we were greeted by one of the most breathtaking sights we had ever seen. The island glistened under the golden sun, the medieval towers of the Old Town rising from the shimmering blue waters. Boats of all shapes and sizes were gathered in the harbor, some brightly painted with lively locals enjoying their day by the sea. It was a scene that perfectly captured the essence of Croatian island life – laid-back, colorful, and brimming with charm.
From the moment we stepped off the ferry, we were immersed in Korčula’s beauty. Its blend of vibrant culture, stunning scenery, and serene atmosphere made it clear that this small island holds a special allure that can only be truly understood by experiencing it in person. The journey from Split was easy and stress-free, but the real magic began as soon as we arrived on this beautiful island.
Things to do in Korčula
Korčula is a charming island full of shops, restaurants, bars and museums. It is also an island full of experiences and activities with a variety of tours and boat hires being available from the seafront. I would highly recommend at least a day trip to Korčula although there is plenty to do with enough activities, bars and restaurant to keep you entertained for a couple of nights on the island during your Croatia travels. Below I have listed the top things to do in Korčula.
Wander the old town
Korčula’s Old Town is often referred to as “Little Dubrovnik” due to its medieval architecture and narrow, cobbled streets. This walled town is a maze of alleyways, each offering a unique glimpse into the island’s history. You can explore its Gothic-Renaissance buildings, such as St. Mark’s Cathedral, or take a leisurely stroll along the ancient stone fortifications, which offer stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. Don’t forget to stop by the central square, where you can enjoy the ambiance of local cafés and soak in the island’s vibrant atmosphere.
Visit the Marco Polo museum
Korčula is believed to be the birthplace of the famous explorer Marco Polo, and the Marco Polo Museum offers an interactive experience that walks you through his life and journeys. The museum showcases artifacts, detailed reconstructions, and multimedia exhibits that tell the story of Polo’s travels along the Silk Road. It’s a must-visit for history buffs or anyone curious about the life of one of history’s most famous adventurers. Additionally, you can visit the Marco Polo House, which some claim to be the actual birthplace of the explorer.
Try the local cuisine
Korčula is a haven for food lovers, offering a mix of traditional Croatian and Mediterranean flavors. You can indulge in seafood freshly caught from the Adriatic, paired with locally produced olive oil and wines from the island’s vineyards. Dishes to try include “pasticada” (a slow-cooked beef stew), “black risotto” (a squid ink dish), and “žrnovski makaruni” (a handmade pasta unique to Korčula). For dessert, don’t miss out on the island’s almond cakes and pastries. Several restaurants in Old Town offer al fresco dining, perfect for soaking up the island’s charm while enjoying a delicious meal.
Hit the beach
Korčula is surrounded by beautiful beaches, making it a perfect destination for those looking to relax by the sea. Some of the best beaches include Vela Przina in Lumbarda, known for its sandy shores, and Pupnatska Luka, a picturesque cove with crystal-clear water and pebbled beaches. Whether you’re into swimming, snorkeling, or simply lounging by the water, Korčula’s beaches offer something for everyone. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard to explore the hidden bays and coves along the coast.
Is Korčula worth the visit?
Absolutely! Korčula is a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Its laid-back atmosphere, stunning landscapes, and rich heritage make it a must-visit for anyone travelling through Croatia. Whether you’re looking to explore historical sites, enjoy local food, or relax on beautiful beaches, Korčula offers a well-rounded experience. It’s also a quieter alternative to more tourist-heavy destinations like Dubrovnik, making it ideal for those seeking a peaceful getaway.
Is Korčula walkable?
Yes, Korčula is highly walkable, especially around the Old Town area. The town is compact, and you can easily explore its historical landmarks and waterfront on foot. Many of the island’s attractions are located within a short walking distance from each other. However, if you plan to explore areas outside the Old Town, such as Lumbarda or more remote beaches, you might want to consider renting a bike, scooter, or car for convenience.
Which island is better, Korčula or Hvar?
Both Korčula and Hvar offer unique experiences, and the better choice depends on what you’re looking for. Korčula is quieter, more laid-back, and rich in history, making it ideal for travellers who prefer a more relaxed and authentic Croatian experience. It’s perfect for exploring old-world charm, indulging in local food, and enjoying serene beaches.
On the other hand, Hvar is known for its vibrant nightlife, luxury resorts, and a more glamorous atmosphere, attracting party-goers and those seeking an energetic social scene. It’s a great destination for upscale dining, beach clubs, and high-end shopping.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a cultural escape with a touch of tranquility, Korčula is the better choice. If you want to mix sun-soaked relaxation with lively nightlife, then Hvar may be more your style.
Conclusion
Korčula is a hidden gem on the Adriatic coast, offering a rich mix of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you spend a day wandering its medieval streets, basking in the sun on its beaches, or indulging in its local delicacies, Korčula is sure to leave a lasting impression.
