Copenhagen – A relaxing weekend in a serene city
You can’t be short of things to do whilst exploring the beautiful city of Copenhagen. From landmarks to unique bars there is something for everyone in the Denmark Capital.
We stayed in Nordhavn which is a short train ride away from the city centre. Whenever I visit another country, I like to take full advantage of their public transport system to see how it compares to transport here in the UK and I can honestly say that Copenhagen’s public transport is fantastic. The stops are within short distance, similar to those on the London Underground and the trains are clean and spacious which can also be said about Copenhagen as a whole. The city centre in Copenhagen was always bustling and there seemed to be lots happening in and around the city, helping to build to the lively and vibrant atmosphere.
Whilst visiting Copenhagen we explored the traditional tourist sights such as Nyhavn and The Little Mermaid. You can read more about these tourist attractions here. We also visited Tivoli Gardens and took a trip to the Freetown of Christiana. I would highly recommend both these activities as they are both extremely special and eye opening in their own ways.
A trip to Tivoli Gardens.
Our trip to Copenhagen was during October time therefore, when we visited Tivoli Gardens, it was decorated in the most beautiful and imaginative way for Halloween. We visited Tivoli Gardens in the evening time and had lots of fun once inside. We entered every arcade possible, bringing us all back to our childhood as we competitively fought to be the top scorers on each machine. We also went on a few rides including a drop which I still believe my stomach is stuck on! After all our evening adventures turns, we decided to stop on a pirate ship for a hot chocolate with rum (don’t knock it until you try it!) The whole evening was magical and finished with a short illumination show over the large lake.
I would revisit Tivoli gardens in a heartbeat.
Visiting Christiana.
Christiana is a Freetown that has recently declared itself independent from the Danish government as well as separating itself from the EU. Everything within Christiana is intriguing from their cannabis-selling markets to the unique “art” and statues that are presented throughout the small town, you are guaranteed to be surprised during your visit to this Freetown. There are also lots of locally owned businesses with Christiana including a vast amount of family run clothes shops that thrive on tourist sales. The locals are extremely friendly and are proud to be able to show their free will and resilience towards “power” which is extremely fascinating to witness. Christiana can be reached by a short Ferry ride from the harbour which is a great way to begin a visit that is sure to impress and amaze all at the same time.
My time in Copenhagen was fun and exciting and I would strongly recommend considering Copenhagen as a short city break or long weekend away. I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed by this vibrant city.
